| Research BasisThis project started with excitement and uncertainty in January of 2015. It is in an initial fase of compiling a list and vital records of Spanish-American volunteers who enlisted among the ranks of The Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The process of identifying soldiers is not without its imperfections. Principally, the search has centered on Spaniards of first and second generation in registries and historical documents pertaining to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. In addition, information has been expanded with the help of microform documents and genealogical websites. From these records, the list on this website has been created. I recognize that there will be more Spaniards to add to this list, and that it will be essentially impossible to create a definitive list, due to the double nationality of many volunteers. The scope of this study will closely study historical works on the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, in search of Spaniards, encompassing only those Spaniards who arrived to fight in Spain from the borders of the United States. Exempt from the scope of this study, though not forgotten, are the Spanish citizens who did not have a connection to the United States prior to being enlisted in the ranks of the International Brigades as the conflict advanced and the ranks of the IB were integrated with domestic Spaniards. When possible, attempts are made to establish contact with descendants and relatives of the volunteers to expand upon the information available in the profiles Biographical information will be compiled into profiles on this website for each of the volunteers present in the list. |
